Harmony of man with nature
NIRAJ VALLEY

Good to know

Roman Festival

The upper part of the Niraj Valley is crossed in a north-south direction by the border of the Roman Empire, which expanded in these areas at the beginning of the 2nd century, with the creation of Dacia Province. The region had been for 150 years the border of both the province and the Roman Empire. The Cohors I Augusta Ituraeorum was stationed in the camp of the auxiliary troop in Călugăreni. In its vicinity a civil colony settlement was founded. Some of the buildings, such as the public baths, have already been identified by archaeologists. The watchtowers of Săcădat castle and Tâmpa were also part of the camp’s fortification system, their purpose being the supervision of the main roads leading up to the province. On the bank of the Niraj River (in a westward direction) one can follow the Roman road which connected Călugăreni with the Mureş Valley.
